Radio Cure Semester 2 Week 4: Off the Hook
This week’s playlist was based on the idea of the “hook” in music – a musical motif that catches the ear – and what that means in the context of music. We explored the hook from as early as the 1950s up until now and everything in between, and there was discussion about what makes a hook, what a hook does and if hooks are important, as well as what some of my favorite hooks are. Radio Cure Semester 2 Week 3: …While it Rained in All the Colors of the Night
First, I’d like to say that last night’s Radio Cure was one of the best, if not the best show I’ve done yet. I think the energy flowed really well and it was one of the most consistent playlists I’ve had yet.
Second, I would like to note that you shouldn’t listen to my show expecting anything specifically. Just because I have the 10 PM Saturday slot doesn’t mean I’m going to be playing music for people to party to. I think what makes college radio really, genuinely unique and interesting is that we as DJs and hosts have the freedom to fully express ourselves through the music we play, and the ability (but not requirement) to challenge what goes on with mainstream radio.
My policy is that I play good music. For that reason, people interested in good music will be interested in Radio Cure. I can’t say that I’m tailoring the playlist to my listeners to the extent that I will constantly be giving you something to dance to or sing along to, but once again, I play good music. Maybe that takes someone, somewhere thinking about what it means for music to be “good,” regardless of whether they are on their roof, in bed, at a gas station, or at a party, to appreciate what I’m at the very least trying to do.
If what you want from radio is only affirmation that tonight is going to be a good, good night, then you have options: iTunes, iPods, other radio stations. But for everyone who wants a unique radio experience, WRGW is one of the best college radio stations you’ll find, and I fully believe that what unique things radio and WRGW in particular have to offer are being appreciated. I know for a fact that you are listening.

Radio Cure Semester 1 Week 9: The White Screen
For the first show in two weeks, since before Spring break, I thought I’d provide sort of a mixed bag, a little bit of everything. I also played a lot of music by artists that have shows coming up around DC or are going to have festival appearances this Summer (or are at least rumored to). My Pitchfork tickets came in the mail the other week, so I’ve been pretty psyched about that. I might write a post with more on the lineup after more of it becomes available.

Brian is visiting for the tail end of this week. Then Emberly. Then a kite flying festival? Then the Asobi Seksu concert on Saturday. Needless to say, it is going to be a busy, fun, exciting week. It would be even nicer if the weather decided to get a little better but well I guess we’ll see about that. I’m still a white boy who listens to hip hop. The extent of my school work is essentially living and breathing Night of the Living Dead. And I’m definitely happy to be able to live and breath a film that is that good.
Things I am listening to lately:
Bon Iver – For Emma, Forever Ago
The National – Boxer
Madvillain – Madvillainy
Burial – Untrue
Asobi Seksu – Citrus
Radio Cure Semester 1 Week 8: Spring
Today’s playlist was Springtime oriented. I thought it would have been really hard to follow up last weeks excellent playlist, but this one was fun, and quite relaxing. Which I needed this week, considering I have four midterms, another test, and a midterm project due. Luckily the weather outside is beautiful, so we can have that along with the impending Spring break to be thankful for.
I won’t be on air next week, as I will be back in IL. The next show will be on Wednesday March 25, as always streamable from gwradio.com from 8-10 AM EST. I look forward to it.

Radio Cure Semester 1 Week 7: Munchkins
This weeks show was by far the most amazing show Radio Cure has had yet. It was all around blast and I’m really happy I got it to work out well. The concept was actually fairly simple. While listening to the instrumental hip hop album Donuts by J Dilla, I realized that all but one of the songs on the album were under two minutes. I thought it would be fun and challenging to make a playlist with all songs under two minutes as well. So I lined up all of the songs under two minutes on my iTunes, picked and chose until I had about five hours worth of music, slowly chizzled my selections down to two hours, and then carefully arranged them. I would say it was a complete success, and that it was not only the most fun show I have ever arranged, but also the most fun to execute. I have always been a fan of micro-music, so I not only got to play music from many of my favorite artists here, but I learned a lot about music as well. I got to play a ton of songs that I would have never thought I would have had the opportunity to play on the radio because they were too short, obscure, un-radio-friendly, or out of place, and it seems like just about everything sounded at home. Thanks a ton to everyone who listened, and I hope we can have even more incredible shows like this in the future.
Some of the song selections are a bit obscure, so I have decided to include the album of origin for each song after the song title, so that everyone can get a better idea of where everything came from.

Radio Cure Semester 1 Week 6: Rags to Riches
This weeks playlist was very exciting. I’ve always had in mind to make a shoegaze/dreampop playlist. Narrowing down the selection was tough but I think I got in a nice sampler. There were a couple essentials I missed, but I had to make the sacrifice in order to get in some of the newer non shoegaze/dreampop stuff. I’m really getting into the new Andrew Bird and Antony and the Johnsons, so that stuff made an appearance, as you can see. Definitely a great show.

Radio Cure Semester 1 Week 4: Machinists
Sorry it took so long to get this playlist up. This was easily the most ambitious, edgy playlist I have done yet. It also took the longest to make, because I had to compress a really large amount of songs that I wanted people to hear into a relatively small amount of air time. I think it worked out really well, and I’m glad that the listeners I talked to kept an open mind about it.

Anyone who has ever listened to my show knows I’m a big fan of M.I.A., and it is important to me that she is doing well, and it sure seems like she is. She did a great job at the grammys, and fingers crossed for not just a win but more an all around good time at the Academy Awards on the 22nd, one of which she has been nominated for.
I hope you all decide to tune in again to Radio Cure on Wednesday at 8 AM, streamable on gwradio.com.

Radio Cure Semester 1 Week 2: Deep Freeze and Great Thaw
Today’s playlist was a bit more free form than last week’s, although the only thing that really unified the music last week was that it was made in 2008, and that it was all good. This week was a sampler for the kinds of themes you might be hearing on Radio Cure this semester; every block of music had its own personality, and I think I segued from genre to genre nicely. Some of it might have been a little hard on the ears for so early in the morning (especially the punk block), but I’ve always liked to start my mornings off with lots of energy, and if this ends up being the type of show we have lots of this semester, I definitely won’t be disappointed with myself.
1. Leon Redbone & Zooey Deschanel – Baby It’s Cold Outside
